Renal insufficiency is a public health problem in Mexico.1,2 The prevalence estimated in 2005 was of 1,200 cases per million inhabitants, rates being higher in the most marginalized states of the Republic. The prevalence of individuals requiring renal function replacement in 2005 was of 130,000. About 60,000 patients received some modality of dialytic therapy, whereas the remaining subjects did not have access to any sort of treatment. Furthermore, of the patients receiving replacement therapy, only 1.9% benefited of a kidney transplant. It is well documented that renal transplantation is the best available treatment for chronic renal insufficiency considering its lower costs, higher survival index and better quality of life with regard to any dialytic procedure.
